ETS4UE: The IB English HL course is built on the assumption that literature is concerned with our conceptions, interpretations, and experiences of the world. Students are encouraged to appreciate the artistry of literature and the impact of authorial choices. All texts will be understood according to their form, content, purpose, and audience and through the social, historical, and cultural contexts that produce and value them. The course will encourage independent, original, critical, and clear thinking demonstrated through written and oral expression. The final component of the IB English HL course, ETS 4UE, is focused on the materials to be used on the Paper two of the formal IB English examination. Each text fits the genre of the novel and/or short story and students will be taught to explore ways in which the various texts can be compared and contrasted to one another in stylistic and narrative components. There is no local MPSJ exam in this course as ETS 4UE culminates in May with the IB English HL exam: Paper One is an exploration of a 'Sight' poem or prose extract -- a piece not formally studied in class but which draws upon a student's analytic skills. Paper Two requires students to use and analyze with purpose two of the four works studied in the final component of of the IB English HL course. |
